Religious Revolutions

Hebrew Bible:

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am El Shaddai. Walk in My ways and be blameless. I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will make you exceedingly numerous.” (Genesis 17:1-2)

I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and house of bondage: You shall have no other gods beside Me. (Genesis 20:1-3)

You shall be holy, for I, the LORD your God, am holy. (Leviticus 19:2)

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD. (Deuteronomy 6:4) (NKJV)

Then I will appoint a single shepherd over them to tend them - My servant David. He shall tend them, he shall be a shepherd to them. I the LORD will be their God, and My servant David shall be a ruler among them - I the LORD have spoken. (Ezekiel 34:23-24)

Only that shall happen which has happened, only that occur which has occurred; there is nothing new beneath the sun! (Ecclesiastes 1:9)

John Calvin, Institution of Christian Religion:

All men of sound Judgment will therefore hold, that a sense of Deity is indelibly engraven on the human heart. And that this belief is naturally engendered in all, and thoroughly fixed as it were in our very bones, is strikingly attested by the contumacy of the wicked, who, though they struggle furiously, are unable to extricate themselves from the fear of God.

I trust I have now sufficiently shown how man’s only resource for escaping from the curse of the law, and recovering salvation, lies in faith; and also what the nature of faith is, what the benefits which it confers, and the fruits which it produces.

First, then, let the reader remember that the providence we mean is not one by which the Deity, sitting idly in heaven, looks on at what is taking place in the world, but one by which he, as it were, holds the helms and overrules all events.

A most pernicious error has very generally prevailed-viz. that Scripture is of importance only in so far as conceded to it by the suffrage of the Church; as if the eternal and inviolable truth of God could depend on the will of men.

The Koran:

This is a blessed Scripture that We have sent down to confirm what came before it and for you to warn the Mother of Cities and all around it. (The Koran, 6:92)

There is no compulsion in religion: true guidance has become distinct from error, so whoever rejects false gods and believes in God has grasped the firmest hand-hold, one that will never break. God is all hearing and all knowing. (The Koran, 2:256)

Say you: We believe in God and in what was sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and all the prophets by their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we devote ourselves to Him. (The Koran, 2:136)

To God belong the East and the West; whithersoever you turn, there is the Face of God; God is All-embracing, All-knowing. (The Koran, 2:115)

We indeed created man; and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are nearer to him than the jugular vein. (The Koran, 50:16)

Those who have been attacked are permitted to take up arms because they have been wronged - God has the power to help them - those who have been driven from their homes only for saying, ‘Our Lord is God.’ If God did not repel some people by means of others, many monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, where God’s name is much invoked, would have been destroyed. God is sure to help those who help His cause - God is strong and mighty. (The Koran, 22:39-40)

Another of His signs is that He created spouses from among yourselves for you to live within tranquility: He ordained love and kindness between you. There truly are signs in this for those who reflect. (The Koran, 30:21)

When the trumpet sounds, that will be a Day of anguish for the disbelievers. They will have no ease. (The Koran, 74:8)

New Testament:

Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. (Matthew 5:17)

Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all because o my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. (Matthew 10:21-22)

From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (John 1:16-17)

I and my Father are one. (John: 10:30) (NKJV)

Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6) (NKJV)

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many in various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. (Hebrews 1:1-2)

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:1-2)

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. (James 1:27)

Book of Enoch:

And behold I saw the clouds: And they were calling me in a vision; and the fogs were calling me; and the course of the stars and the lightnings were rushing me and causing me to desire; and in the vision, the winds were causing me to fly and rushing me high up into heaven. (1 Enoch 14:8)

It is good to declare these words to those of former times, but one should not without the beginning of wisdom from those of latter days. (1 Enoch 37:3)

On that day, all the kings, the governors, the high officials, and those who rule the earth shall fall down before him on their faces, and worship and rise their hopes in that Son of Man; they shall beg and plead for mercy at his feet. (1 Enoch 62:9)

Now listen to me, my children, and walk in the way of righteousness, and do not walk in the way of wickedness, for all those who walk in the ways of injustice shall perish. (1 Enoch 91:19)

Examine the heaven, you sons of heaven, and all the works of the Most High; and be afraid to do evil in his presence. (1 Enoch 101:1)

Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent:

Furthermore, to check unbridled spirits, it decrees that no one relying on his own judgment shall, in matters of faith and morals pertaining to the edification of Christian doctrine, distorting the Holy Scriptures in accordance with his own conceptions, presume to interpret them contrary to that sense which holy mother Church, to whom it belongs to judge their true sense and interpretation, has held and holds...

Canon 1. If anyone says that man can be justified before God by his own works, whether done by his own natural powers or through the teaching of the law, without divine grace through Jesus Christ, let him be anathema.

Canon 1. If anyone says that the sacraments of the New Law were not all instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ, or that there are more or less than seven, namely, baptism, confirmation, Eucharist, penance, extreme unction, order and matrimony, or that any of these seven is not truly and intrinsically a sacrament, let him be anathema.

Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae:

Objection 1. It seems that the existence of God cannot be demonstrated. For it is an article of faith that God exists. But what is of faith cannot be demonstrated, because a demonstration produces scientific knowledge, whereas faith is of the unseen. Therefore, it cannot be demonstrated that God exists.

Objection 1. It seems that God reprobates no man. For nobody reprobates what he loves. But God loves every man, according to: ‘Thou lovest all things that are, and Thou hatest none of the things Thou hast made’. Therefore God reprobates no man.

Objection 1. It would seem that the supreme good, God, is the cause of evil.

Objection 1. It would seem that the woman should not have been made in the first production of things. For the Philosopher says, that the female is a misbegotten male. But nothing misbegotten or defective should have been in the first production of things. Therefore woman should not have been made at that first production.

Objection 1. It would seem that every human action is good, and that none is evil. For Dionysius says that evil acts not, save in virtue of the good. But no evil is done in virtue of good. Therefore no action is evil.
